Europe 2020 is the EU’s strategy for growth and jobs. It is based on a smart, sustainable and inclusive development model as it is considered the only way to overcome the structural deficiencies of the European economy, improve its competitiveness and productivity and underpin a sustainable social market economy.
The targets adopted by the EU for the present decade are grouped into the following areas:
- Employment: 75% of the population aged 20-64 years should be employed.
- Research and Development (R&D): 3% of the EU’s GDP should be invested in R&D.
- Climate change and energy: Greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 20% compared to 1990; the share of renewable energy sources in final energy consumption should be increased to 20% and energy efficiency should be improved by 20%.
- Education: the share of early school leavers should be under 10% and at least 40% of the population aged 30-34 years should have tertiary or equivalent education.
- Poverty and social exclusion: At least 20 million fewer people at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
