Castelló’s public transport network celebrates two
years of accessible bet
17 city bus stops incorporate versatile platforms that
expand the space during waiting times and improve the
security and use by citizens
With a budget of 290,000 euros co-financed by the
ERDF, is the first of 12 EDUSI operations executed
Castelló’s public transport network celebrates two years of accessible bet.
Thanks to the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI)
promoted by the City Council and the ERDF funds, 17 bus stops incorporate
since summer 2018 innovative polyvinyl chloride -PVC- platforms for
improve accessibility and ensure safer and more comfortable waiting.
The project was the first of twelve operations carried out that are
materializing the city within the framework of EDUSI-Transforma Castelló, which is the
arrival of the largest European investment in the capital: 20.2 million euros.
The new platforms, with a budget of
accessibility to the municipal urban transport network for all citizens – with or without
reduced mobility; they improve the safety of those who use them by increasing
distance from the road traffic; and they achieve a more comfortable waiting. In addition, they improve the
functionality of the public transport passenger collection manoeuvre as
prevents stops from being occupied by other vehicles.
“All these improvements equal the rights of people and advance the
the achievement of a more inclusive and friendlier city; in the transformation of
Castelló from the area of mobility and accessibility”, the mayor recalls,
Amparo Marco. Indirectly, this action helps to promote the use of
urban public transport, to reduce travel by private vehicle and
thus reducing CO2 emissions.
The stops that have improved accessibility within this
EDUSI Transforma Castelló investments are located in San Roque street;
avenida Benicàssim (2); camino La Plana; carretera de l’Alcora (2); avenida Hermanos
Bou (2); María Rosa Molas; Columbretes; Maestro Ripollés; Joaquín Costa; avenida
del Mar; Casalduch Avenue (2), República Argentina Street, in front of the Hospital
Provincial, and on Quevedo Avenue.
They are platforms made up of modular pieces of recycled plastic that are
combine and fit together like a puzzle allowing multiple configurations with
different widths, lengths or even angles. They offer great versatility for
adapt to the urban space and the different public transport stops.
“Sometimes small gestures make cities big. To be able to live,
to move and participate in urban life in a full, undifferentiated way, is the
triple challenge in which Castelló looks as an inclusive city. Next to Europe, and
with Europe”, emphasizes Marco.
It is worth remembering that Castelló has been awarded as the second best city
accessible Europe 2020. The award given by the European Commission was
this year a total of 50 locations on the continent.
